Rallying the faithful at a political event. |

Many of you will take the safe route of getting a job and then coming to Taiwan. Nothing wrong with that at all, as Taiwan's cram school operations are getting more and more reliable. However, you should probably ask some questions and find out a few things before taking any job: 1. What day of the month do I get paid? 2. What is the relationship between the salary and hours worked? How many hours a week do I have to work for that salary? Remember: $60K per month, divided by 40 hours/wk, works out to a piddling $375/hr. Normal pay is around $500/hr. Hours worked are crucially important! 3. Do I get holidays and vacations paid? What kind of vacations do I get? 4. Do I get help finding or paying for housing? If outside of Taipei, ask if they will help you get a scooter. 5. What about an airplane ticket? Is it deducted from my pay? 6. Is there a "training wage" for the first month or two or three? Some places pay a substantially lower training wage for the first quarter. Check on that. 7. Is any portion of the first month's salary withheld? That's technically illegal, although a lot of places do it. 8. What areas of the island are available for me to work in at your company? Can I work in Kaohsiung or Taitung (places where the cost of living is much cheaper than Taipei)? |
